Raphael “Ray” Wassenberg – (1921-2004)

Raphael “Ray” Wassenberg, aus Humboldt, Nebraska, starb am Montag, den 19 April 2004 im Alter von 82 Jahren im Colonial Acres Nursing Home.

A service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 23, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Dawson, Neb. The Rev. Bernard Kimminau will officiate. Burial will be in Humboldt Cemetery.

Raphael Wassenberg was born April 26, 1921, in Marysville, the son of Frank and Martha Smith Wassenberg. He attended St. Gregory’s Catholic School and graduated from Marysville High School in 1939.

He married Marie Zinn Oct. 25, 1943, in Frankfort. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945 and in the Korean Conflict in 1950. He and his wife purchased the Western Auto Store in Humboldt in 1950 and owned the store till he retired in 1993. He was a member of the Legion Post 269, the fire department, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, all of Humboldt, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Dawson. He served on the Humboldt City Council.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; his parents; two brothers, Laurence and Paul Wassenberg; a sister Sister Margretha Landoll; and two great grandsons, Trevor and Brady Lingenfelter.

He is survived by three daughters, Patty Burrow, Indianapolis, Ind., Ann Usher and Sue Wassenberg, both of Lincoln; two sons, Bob Wassenberg, Lincoln, and Gary Wassenberg, Humboldt; two sisters, Vera Landoll, Hanover, and Martha Meier, Marysville; a brother, Gerald Wassenberg, Marysville; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
