Gilbert August Wassenberg, geboren am 6 Juli 1921 in Marysville, starb im Alter von 82 Jahren am Donnerstag, den 27 Mai 2004 im Community Memorial Healthcare.

A rosary was read at 7 p.m. Monday, May 31, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Marysville. A service was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, at St. Gregory’s with the Rev. Bill Bruning officiating. Bob Welch was organist, and the church choir sang “Be Not Afraid,” “Prayer of St. Francis,” “On Eagle’s Wings” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Pallbearers were the nine grandsons, Steve Johnson, Dave Johnson, Mark Johnson, Lance Wassenberg, Dustin Zutterman, Ryan Wassenberg, Russ Wassenberg, Mark John Hartsook and Brian Wassenberg.

Honorary pallbearers were Jim Schramm Sr., Jim Borgerding Sr., August Kathe, Kenny Koch, Elvin Shum and Arlo Plegge. Burial was in St. Gregory’s Catholic Cemetery.

Gilbert August Wassenberg was born July 6, 1921, at Marysville to Joseph and Mary Olberding Wassenberg. On April 11, 1944, he married Lillian Novak at St. Gregory’s. They farmed all their lives north of Home City. His pastimes included working the land, fishing and spending time with friends and family.

He was preceded in death by one son, Mark Wassenberg, in 1975; his parents; and two brothers, Lester and Lawrence Wassenberg.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian of the home; three sons, Larry Wassenberg and Lynn Wassenberg, both of Home City, and Lee Wassenberg, Lincoln; three daughters, Betty Johnson, Topeka, Mary Zutterman, Marysville, and Lisa Hartsook, Herkimer; a brother, Darrell Wassenberg, Marysville; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established and may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
